Blending Durability with Natural Beauty in a Mature Backyard
This project in Meaford, Ontario presented a unique challenge that called for subtlety, strength, and smart design. The homeowners - a retired couple who had relocated north to enjoy the tranquility of nature - were looking to rebuild their aging wood deck. While they loved the original layout, the maintenance demands and weather-related wear had caught up with the structure. They wanted a new deck that retained the footprint they were used to, but one that would last and require far less upkeep.
At Simcoe Decks, we understand that upgrading a deck is often about more than changing materials. For these clients, the goal was to preserve the feel of their outdoor living space while replacing the outdated wood deck with a low-maintenance, high-performance alternative that would blend into their beautifully landscaped yard.
Replacing a Worn-Out Deck Without Disrupting the Landscape
The old wood structure had served its purpose, but it was well past its prime. It required annual maintenance, had become weathered and faded, and was no longer structurally dependable. The clients were clear: they didn’t want to spend their retirement staining boards or worrying about rot. They wanted to sit outside, enjoy the changing seasons, and host family without hassle.
But the deck wasn’t the only consideration. Their backyard was filled with mature gardens, established trees, and layered landscaping. The biggest challenge wasn’t just replacing the deck - it was doing so without disturbing the natural setting that had developed around it.

Careful Construction with Minimal Disruption
Working around existing landscaping always requires precision and care. From the start, our team focused on protecting every shrub, planter, and pathway. The original deck’s footprint allowed us to recreate the shape and layout without expanding or cutting into new areas. We carefully disassembled the old structure and installed new footings using helical piles, which minimize excavation and are ideal for stabilizing decks in soft or variable soil.
With the foundation secured, we built a completely new frame using the Fortress Evolution Steel Framing System. Steel deck framing provides superior strength and longevity compared to wood, and it ensures that the new structure will remain straight, level, and secure for decades with no warping or shifting.
Upgraded Materials That Require Less Maintenance
The new deck surface features Deckorators Costa, part of their Voyage line of composite decking designed for maximum durability and minimal expansion in temperature extremes. With a natural wood look and slip-resistant texture, it provides a safe and beautiful surface for the clients to enjoy year-round.
We also installed Fortress vertical cable rail, which adds a sleek, modern look without obstructing the view of the gardens. This railing system offers durability and safety while enhancing the overall aesthetic of the deck.
To finish the space, we incorporated a subtle outdoor lighting package, using post cap lights that provide just enough illumination in the evening without detracting from the quiet, natural feel of the backyard.

A Seamless Update That Looks Right at Home
The final result is a deck that feels as though it’s always been part of the landscape - only now, it’s built to last. The combination of steel framing, composite decking, and cable railing delivers the low-maintenance performance the homeowners wanted, with the style and comfort they deserve.
From a design perspective, the deck fits naturally into the surrounding gardens and mature trees. During our fall photoshoot, the golden and red hues of the leaves made the project shine. The clients were thrilled with the outcome and shared a full video testimonial to express their appreciation for the care and craftsmanship delivered throughout the process.
Project Investment
The approximate investment for this steel frame composite deck was $75,000, which includes premium materials, minimal-disruption foundation work, cable railing, and lighting. This cost reflects the care taken to preserve the surrounding landscaping, the durability of materials used, and the customized approach to replacing a deck within a mature setting.
