From Basic Builder Deck to Personalized Outdoor Living
At Simcoe Decks, we know that a thoughtfully designed custom deck is more than just a platform - it’s the foundation of year-round outdoor living. Our recent project on Crestview Court in The Blue Mountains reflects this philosophy. What began as a modest, builder-grade structure evolved into a multi-purpose backyard environment that blends natural beauty, modern materials, and custom features.
The homeowners who were a retired couple, approached us with a vision. They wanted a space that was equal parts peaceful retreat and gathering place - something that could serve as their daily oasis while also accommodating family and friends when they visited. The plan was to combine a new composite deck, garden zones, a pool, shaded seating, and landscape features into a cohesive outdoor environment with smooth transitions and long-term durability.
A Backyard That Didn’t Match the Lifestyle
At the start, the existing outdoor setup consisted of a small wood deck that had been installed by a previous builder. It lacked character, shade, and connection to the rest of the yard. The couple rarely used it because it didn’t offer the comfort or function they were looking for.
Like many homes built during the pandemic, this project had also been impacted by supply shortages. While the homeowners had strong ideas about how they wanted to use the space, getting access to quality materials was a major concern. As a trusted Blue Mountains deck builder, we understood the importance of helping them plan confidently while navigating those uncertainties.
Managing Time, Trade Partners, and Tight Deadlines
Although the site itself was easy to access and build on, timing became the biggest challenge. The clients had scheduled a large family visit from overseas, and everything needed to be complete by the time their guests arrived. This created a non-negotiable deadline that required careful coordination between our deck team, landscape partners, pool installers, and electricians.
Meeting this timeline meant staging each phase in advance, securing materials early, and working in parallel wherever possible. Projects of this scope often take longer, but with consistent communication and clear planning, we were able to keep progress moving and deliver as promised.

Material Choices That Prioritize Performance and Design
When it comes to composite decking, not all products perform equally in Canadian conditions. For this build, we selected Deckorators Voyage decking, a top-tier composite decking product made with Eovations™ technology. Its mineral-based core resists moisture, warping, and temperature-related expansion better than most composites. We used the color Tundra as the primary surface with Sierra accent boards to create contrast and architectural interest.
The entire custom deck was built on Fortress Evolution steel framing, offering long-term strength and dimensional stability. Unlike pressure-treated wood, steel framing resists movement, pests, and rot over time, which makes it ideal for clients who want a truly low-maintenance outdoor living space.
Rather than incorporating a traditional railing, the project called for a custom powder-coated privacy wall, integrated beneath a timber pavilion. This approach created enclosure and comfort without blocking sightlines. It also gave the seating area a room-like feel, perfect for hosting or relaxing on summer evenings.

Lighting That Extends Outdoor Enjoyment
As with many of our premium builds, outdoor lighting played a key role in bringing the space to life. We installed a complete In-Lite lighting system to highlight the deck structure, pavilion, and adjacent landscaping. Thoughtfully placed lights create a soft ambiance, improve safety, and extend the usable hours of the backyard - especially during shoulder seasons when evenings come earlier.
These lighting elements are wired into a low-voltage system for energy efficiency and feature dimmable zones, allowing the homeowners to adjust the feel of the space depending on the occasion. Whether it’s a quiet night for two or a full backyard celebration, the lighting brings warmth and personality to the layout.
A Finished Space That Feels Connected and Complete
The new custom deck offers a seamless flow from the kitchen and living areas directly into the backyard. The pavilion anchors the space, offering shelter and visual balance, while the composite decking connects the various outdoor zones. From lounging in the shade to hosting a poolside BBQ, the homeowners now have a yard that works for every season and every type of guest.
This is what we aim for in every project - not just a structure, but a livable extension of the home that adds value, comfort, and function.
Project Investment
The approximate investment for the deck and outdoor lighting package was $70,000. This includes the custom privacy feature, integrated lighting, and premium composite and steel materials. The pool, landscape work, and pavilion structure were completed by trade partners and quoted separately. The final result is a fully integrated outdoor environment designed to perform year after year with minimal upkeep.
