Transforming a Neglected Patio into a Backyard Retreat

At Simcoe Decks, we specialize in transforming overlooked outdoor spaces into refined extensions of the home. Our goal is to create spaces that feel inviting, well-crafted, and built to last. One of our recent projects at Alpine Way in Barrie, Ontario is a clear example of what happens when thoughtful design meets expert craftsmanship. What began as a tired and underused patio is now a beautifully constructed, multi-level composite deck that perfectly suits the homeowners’ lifestyle.

The couple who owned the home wanted to move away from the maintenance demands of their existing backyard. Their main goal was to create a space where they could step outside, relax, and enjoy their property without constantly tending to it. They didn’t have a specific design in mind but knew they wanted something long-lasting, attractive, and easy to care for. That trust gave our team the opportunity to listen closely and develop a vision from a near-blank slate.

Technical Challenges and a Winter Start

The original space came with several limitations. The aging stone patio was no longer draining properly, which left water pooling across the surface after rain. It lacked visual appeal and didn’t offer a layout that encouraged regular use. Without function or charm, the space stayed neglected. While the clients weren’t sure what direction to take, they were ready for a complete transformation.

From the outset, the site presented a few technical challenges. The homeowners expressed interest in a multi-level design, but the elevation difference was minimal due to how close the existing grade was to the foundation. We had to be strategic in how we created distinct levels while keeping the structure practical. The drainage issue was also a top priority. We began the project by removing the stone patio and regrading the entire area. A base layer of clear stone was installed to allow water to move freely and avoid future pooling. Another complication was the winter build schedule. Our team began site work in December and returned after the holiday break to find more than two feet of snow covering the entire project area. Despite the conditions, we pushed forward and stayed on track while maintaining a safe work environment.

Building with Strength, Style, and Smart Materials

To deliver a long-lasting, low-maintenance result, we selected materials that offer both strength and style. The deck surface features Deckorators Voyage decking in four rich colours: Costa, Sierra, Khaya, and Dark Slate. We used three board widths - 3.5", 5.5", and 7.25" - to add visual variety and depth to the layout.

The framing was completed using Fortress Evolution steel, which provides long-term structural integrity. The deck is supported by helical piles to ensure long-term performance through seasonal changes. Privacy panels from Hideaway were added for comfort and seclusion, and CAMO hidden fasteners delivered a smooth, uninterrupted surface. We also installed an In-Lite lighting package to extend the deck’s usability into the evening hours.

A Composite Deck That Delivers in Every Season

The final product is a clean, modern deck with multiple levels that enhance the natural flow of the backyard. It solves the drainage issues, reclaims usable outdoor space, and offers a maintenance-free design the homeowners can enjoy year-round. The layout creates distinct zones for lounging and entertaining, while the combination of finishes and lighting gives the deck a warm, polished feel.

Project Investment

This project was completed with an approximate investment of $150,000. That cost reflects the complexity of the design, the use of premium materials, and the challenges of building through the winter season. The result is a durable and visually stunning outdoor living space that has completely changed how the homeowners use their backyard.
